Music Education for the Twentieth Century

Prelude Studios is run by Jenn Mong and Julian Abbott. After graduating from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, they set out to create a friendly, welcoming music school where the joy of music is nurtured alongside strong foundations in musical theory and instrumental technique.
Jenn and Julian come from diverse musical backgrounds, including classical piano, free improvisation, jazz, blues, pop, indie rock, and dance music. They believe that drawing from a variety of styles leads to a richer, more holistic approach to music-making, and they encourage students to experience music beyond the classroom as a meaningful way to connect and communicate with others.
Lessons involve development of technical skills (eg. scales, chords, arpeggios), explanations of how those technical skills are used in music, note reading practice, strategies for home practice and learning, and learning music by reading and/or by ear.
The studio is conveniently located in the heart of Little Italy, accessible by both public transport and available parking nearby. It is fully equipped with a Yamaha P-22 acoustic piano, amp and microphone.

Jenn Mong
Co-Founder & Piano Instructor
Jenn Mong is a performer and improviser based in Montréal. After graduating from a Masters in Piano Performance at McGill in 2023, Jenn has performed at Edifice Wilder, Arts in the Margins Festival, Suoni Per il Popolo, Ostrava Days in Czech Republic, the Darmstadt Summer Institute, the DiMenna Centre in New York, and Constellation Performing Arts Chicago.
Other than performing, teaching is one of Jenn’s passions; they have been working as an educator for almost a decade with students of all ages (as young as three to adults), from beginner levels to advanced (up to Grade 10 RCM Piano), in classical, popular, and contemporary styles, with experience in music theory, history and composition. Their goal is to work alongside each individual to reach whatever musical goal they might have, whether that be exam preparation, expanding their musical horizons, or just having fun.
